Rayleigh-Taylor Instability in a Compressible Fluid
نویسنده
چکیده
Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a compressible fluid is reconsidered. The density is allowed to vary with pressure under the barotropy assumption. For the case with equal speeds of sound in the two superposed fluids, in order to give a non-trivial compressibility correction to the Rayleigh-Taylor growth rate, the compressibility correction is calculated to O(g/ka). To this order, compressibility effects are found to reduce the growth rate.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor instability
This paper concerns the dynamics of two layers of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid lying atop one another. The lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom, and the upper fluid is bounded above by a trivial fluid of constant pressure. This is a free boundary problem: the interfaces between the fluids and above the upper fluid are free to move. The fluids are acted on by gravity in the ...
متن کاملRayleigh Taylor instability of two superposed compressible fluids in un-magnetized plasma
The linear Rayleigh Taylor instability of two superposed compressible Newtonian fluids is discussed with the effect of surface tension which can play important roles in space plasma. As in both the superposed Newtonian fluids, the system is stable for potentially stable case and unstable for potentially unstable case in the present problem also. The equations of the problem are solved by normal...

This is the final project paper for HPC Fall 2012 course in New York University. In this paper, we describe an implemention of compressible inviscid fluid solvers on Graphics Processing Units using NVIDIA’s CUDA. Using the method of lines approach with the third order Runge-Kutta time integration scheme, piecewise linear reconstruction, and a Harten-Lax-van Leer Riemann solver, we achieve an ov...
متن کاملRayleigh–Taylor instability in nonlinear Schrödinger flow
The Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) is a fundamental fluid instability that occurs when a light fluid is accelerated into a heavier one. While techniques for observing the RTI in classical fluids continue to improve, the instability has not been demonstrated in quantum fluids. Here, we exploit the formal equivalence between condensed matter and coherent nonlinear optics to observe the superfl...
متن کاملA front-tracking/ghost-fluid method for fluid interfaces in compressible flows
A front-tracking/ghost-fluid method is introduced for simulations of fluid interfaces in compressible flows. The new method captures fluid interfaces using explicit front-tracking and defines interface conditions with the ghost-fluid method. Several examples of multiphase flow simulations, including a shock–bubble interaction, the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, ...
